Customized WeiBond 4000 & ATLA1200 CNC for an Icelandic Thermoplastic Manufacturer

In 2024, an established Icelandic thermoplastic manufacturer expanded its in-house fabrication capability with two complementary Weissenberg systems: a customized WeiBond 4000 plastic sheet butt welder and an ATLA1200 CNC fitting fabrication machine.
The WeiBond 4000 was configured with a 4000 mm working width, 90° vertical butt welding and a movable beam, while the ATLA1200 CNC added dedicated capability for fabricating large-diameter thermoplastic fittings up to 1200 mm.
Rather than purchasing two unrelated machines, the customer was strengthening two connected areas of production: large-format sheet fabrication and large-diameter pipe fitting fabrication.

The Requirement: Expand More Than One Fabrication Capability
The customer's requirement extended beyond purchasing a standard plastic sheet welding machine.
On the sheet fabrication side, the workshop needed a large-format platform capable of handling 4-meter thermoplastic sheets.
Flat welding alone was not enough. The machine also needed to support 90° right-angle welding and provide more flexible access when loading, positioning and removing large workpieces.
At the same time, the customer wanted to increase its ability to manufacture large-diameter fabricated thermoplastic fittings in-house.
The 2024 project therefore addressed two complementary production areas: sheet-based structures and pipe-based fabricated fittings.
Two Machines, Two Complementary Production Processes
Large thermoplastic fabrication projects rarely consist of only flat sheet or only straight pipe.
Different components require different fabrication methods, which is why the two machines were selected to address separate but connected parts of the production workflow.
| Fabrication Area | Selected Equipment | Main Capability |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet Fabrication | WeiBond 4000 | 4000 mm flat welding + 90° vertical welding |
| Pipe Fitting Fabrication | ATLA1200 CNC | Fabricated fittings from 630–1200 mm |
WeiBond 4000: Customized Beyond Standard Flat Welding
The WeiBond 4000 Plastic Sheet Butt Welder provides a maximum working width of 4000 mm, giving the customer the capacity to join large thermoplastic sheets on one platform.
For this Iceland project, however, standard flat welding was only one part of the required workflow.
The machine was customized with:
- • 90° vertical welding capability for suitable right-angle sheet structures
- • A movable beam to increase access and flexibility around large workpieces
Why 90° Vertical Welding Was Added
A standard sheet butt welding machine joins two thermoplastic sheets on the same plane.
This is ideal for producing larger continuous panels, but large fabricated structures may also require long right-angle joints.
The additional 90° welding configuration allows suitable sheets to be positioned at approximately 90 degrees during the heated-tool welding cycle.
90° Vertical Welding → Right-Angle Fabricated Structures
This gives the workshop another controlled method for producing suitable long, straight structural seams.
Extrusion welding can still be used for complex geometries, reinforcement and detail work. The vertical butt welding configuration therefore complements rather than replaces other fabrication methods.

Why the Movable Beam Matters
Large-format plastic fabrication creates a challenge that is sometimes overlooked during machine selection: workpiece access.
As sheet dimensions and partially assembled components become larger, operators need enough space to:
- • Load large thermoplastic sheets
- • Position bulky workpieces
- • Reposition partially fabricated structures
- • Prepare parts for flat or vertical welding
- • Remove completed components from the welding area
A permanently fixed machine structure can restrict access during some fabrication sequences.
The movable beam configuration provides greater flexibility around the working area, helping the workshop adapt the machine to different sheet sizes and component geometries.
For large-format fabrication, material handling can be just as important as maximum welding width.
Movable beam configuration designed to improve access and flexibility around large workpieces.
ATLA1200 CNC: Expanding Large-Diameter Fitting Fabrication
The second machine supplied as part of the project was the ATLA1200 CNC Fitting Fabrication Machine.
While the WeiBond 4000 works with flat thermoplastic sheets, the ATLA1200 CNC addresses the pipe side of the customer's production.
Its working range covers 630–1200 mm (24" IPS–48" IPS), allowing the workshop to fabricate large-diameter thermoplastic fittings from pipe sections.
Depending on the fitting configuration, the machine can be used to produce:
- • Elbows/bends
- • Tees
- • Crosses
- • Wyes
This gives the workshop additional in-house capability for producing customized fittings rather than relying only on straight pipe or externally sourced fabricated components.

Why the WeiBond 4000 and ATLA1200 CNC Work Well Together
The value of this project becomes clearer when the two machines are considered together.
Industrial thermoplastic fabrication may involve:
- • Large welded sheet panels
- • Right-angle sheet structures
- • Large pipe elbows
- • Tees and branches
- • Cross fittings
- • Wyes
- • Other customized thermoplastic assemblies
The WeiBond 4000 addresses the sheet-fabrication side of this workflow.
The ATLA1200 CNC addresses the large-diameter pipe-fitting side.
Together, they give the workshop a broader in-house fabrication range than either machine could provide alone.
Production Requirement vs. Selected Solution
| Production Requirement | Selected Solution |
|---|---|
| Large-format sheet fabrication | WeiBond 4000 / 4000 mm working width |
| Flat sheet joining | Heated-tool butt welding |
| Right-angle sheet structures | 90° vertical butt welding |
| Improved access around large workpieces | Movable beam configuration |
| Large-diameter fitting fabrication | ATLA1200 CNC / 630–1200 mm |
| Elbows, tees and branch fittings | Elbow, tee, cross & wye fabrication capability |
A Broader Approach to Thermoplastic Equipment Selection
This Iceland project illustrates why fabrication equipment should be selected around the complete production process, rather than treating every machine as an isolated purchase.
If the customer's requirement had involved only large flat sheets, a conventional 4-meter butt welding machine could have been sufficient.
Once right-angle structures, workpiece access and large-diameter fabricated fittings were considered, the project required a broader combination of equipment.
What Makes This Project Different?
1. It Was a Combined Capacity-Expansion Project
The investment covered both sheet-based fabrication and large-diameter pipe fitting fabrication.
2. The Sheet Welder Was Customized Around Product Geometry
The addition of 90° welding means the WeiBond 4000 was intended for more than flat panel production.
3. Workpiece Handling Influenced Machine Design
The movable beam reflects the practical reality that access and positioning become increasingly important as thermoplastic components grow larger.
4. Fitting Fabrication Extended to 1200 mm
The ATLA1200 CNC added dedicated capacity for fabricated thermoplastic fittings across the 630–1200 mm range.
